If you’re anything like me, you truly view your home as the ultimate comfort zone. I’ve always been this way. Even in college when my friends were going out on weeknights, I often preferred to stay in and watch a movie. I thrive on cozy! So what exactly is the key to creating a cozy space? Layers, textures, mixed patterns, wood tones, lighting, greenery and thoughtfulness… All of which can be incorporated in one decor style: traditional.
While there are many design styles out there, there is nothing quite as inviting as a traditional layered, cozy, livable home. This is why so many are enamored by the Nancy Meyers Aesthetic. You can almost feel the warmth and comfort radiating from her curations. Growing up I was obsessed with the Father of the Bride house. Not only is the exterior TDF, but the interior definitely gives those traditional comfort vibes. (PS: I even named by daughter Annie after the beloved Annie Banks!) This is the kind of space I want my children to know. I want them to crave that nostalgic feeling when they’re away at college or starting off in a new city. I want my kids to walk through the front door for the holidays feeling like, while some minor things change, their childhood home is the same cozy home. The way to do this? Create a home that is timeless and traditional in its elements. If your style is timeless, it won’t change drastically over the years. You may swap out a few furniture pieces or add new area rugs, but the feeling and memories your home evokes will remain the same.
Traditional Style Decor
While the “big pieces” (furniture, layout, etc.) are definitely important when it comes to traditional style, the curated decor, artwork and textiles can have a big impact on really making this design style hit home. Before I share some pieces that help achieve the traditional style for your home, it’s important to note that this is the way to do so on a budget. True timeless, traditional pieces are the ones that came from our grandparents’ homes, the auction from the Colonial in the wealthy neighborhood one town over, or if you’re super lucky, Facebook Marketplace! They tend to cost a pretty penny nowadays, falling under the category of “antique”. They are the Henkel Harris or Lexington dining table, the mahogany buffet or the marble top French chest. They are the pieces that I have on my running “wish list” to add in over time, when I finally come across these unicorns at a reasonable price. But for now, I seek to create a traditional home by adding darker wood pieces, layered textures, and warm finishes.

Traditional Home Finds from Target
Target has a few great tried and true pieces that I’d categorize as classic traditional. Target does tend to get the stigma of “fast furniture”, but for the right stage of life and budget, I think they’re great! While every family’s aesthetic is different, to me there is nothing quite as comforting and inviting as traditional home elements. It stands the test of time and remains home forever. Of course, what makes a house a home goes well beyond the decor in it, but it certainly helps to establish the overall comforting vibe it exudes.
